Hirakud FRP

Hirakud FRP, located in Sambalpur district, Odisha, boasts one of the most sophisticated yet low-cost aluminium rolling mills in India that specialises in thin-gauge, high-precision products. The plant was conceptualised through a joint effort by Hindalco Industries Ltd. and Novelis to meet the demand for can stock in the Asian market.

Hirakud FRP has a total production capacity of 135KTPA and accounts for 22% of Hindalco’s total rolled products. It meets 85% of its power requirements from our captive power plant under an open-access arrangement; the remaining 15% is sourced from grid supply. The plant produces a variety of flat-rolled products, ultra-light gauge foil stock, can body stock for beverage cans, closure stock for bottle caps, fan blade stock, electronic panel stock, and other sheets and coils for the electrical, air conditioning, consumer durables, transport, and defence sectors. In addition to this, Hirakud FRP has pioneered the use of aluminium in sustainable transport solutions such as railway wagons, buses, bulkers, and trailers.

The flagship equipment at Hirakud FRP is the can stock plant from Novelis, which was transferred from its former location at the Rogerstone facility in Britain after its closure. Additionally, Hirakud FRP is equipped with state-of-the-art machinery including scalpers, soaking pits, hot and cold mills, annealers, roll grinders, and finishing and packing equipment.

This facility is the first in India to have the capability to produce can body stock. By leveraging Novelis’ advanced technology and the unique cost advantage of sourcing aluminium from the nearby Hirakud smelter, Hirakud FRP has established itself as a low-cost, high-technology FRP centre. This allows us to successfully compete in the global market, diversify our portfolio, and meet the growing demand for can body stock, both in India and abroad.
