For Hindalco, applications in electric vehicles (EV) and energy storage systems (ESS) for renewables are strategic growth areas. Hindalco started its journey of producing battery foils in 2018. Our first-generation battery foil, distinguished by its high conductivity and purity, was validated for defence and space applications. In 2022, we forayed into the EV and ESS market with battery foils of high mechanical strength, elongation and conductivity, characteristics necessary for lithium-ion batteries.
Our current portfolio includes battery grade aluminium foil (battery foils), structural components of prismatic cells, bus bars, battery enclosures and specialty alumina for separators.
Hindalco Industries Limited has committed to an investment of USD 100 million to establish a cutting-edge facility dedicated to the production of battery cathode foils, a crucial raw material for lithium-ion cells. The initiative aims to cater to the burgeoning EV and ESS sectors. This advanced facility is designed with an annual production capacity of 25,000 tonne. It is capable of supporting the manufacturing needs of 100 GWh of lithium-ion cell production.

Our aluminium for prismatic cell casing is specifically designed to meet the stringent demands of EV applications, offering exceptional performance and reliability.
Our customer qualification line near Nagpur has a 2,400-tonne annual capacity. The upgraded Mouda foil mill includes a double enclosure, battery slitter, corona treatment facility, and enhanced testing lab capabilities for battery-grade foils. We have successfully been supplying to global customers across Europe, the USA, Asia and India.
We have developed four different battery-grade alloys, including AA1100 and AA1060, and a cutting-edge Hindalco alloy with superior properties for advanced battery applications. Designed for battery foils, it offers high elongation, tensile strength and outstanding conductivity.
