Community

At Hindalco Industries Ltd., we are committed to working with our stakeholders to realise social, environmental and economic benefits for the communities around our operations. We ensure that we avoid, minimise and remediate any impact that our operations may have on the communities. We take care not to impinge upon common property resource rights like water and energy sources, and strive towards positive community impact through various corporate social responsibility initiatives.

Education

Our education initiatives focus on enabling children from socially and financially backward communities to lead self-sufficient lives when they grow up. These initiatives also help with local employment opportunities, improve quality of life, and earn the goodwill of community members and local governments.

Our education programmes are aligned with the three UN SDGs of Quality Education, Gender Equality and Reduced Inequalities, and focus on:

  • Pre-school education

Healthcare

Good health is key to individual and community well-being. Improving access to healthcare and building a strong healthcare infrastructure in and around local communities therefore remains our priority.

We have also stood by our communities throughout the three waves of the COVID-19 pandemic, by helping provide critical and timely healthcare services. Hindalco’s overall healthcare initiatives include preventive healthcare programmes, curative healthcare, mother and child care, quality/support programmes and the development of healthcare infrastructure. As part of our ongoing efforts to raise awareness and improve access to healthcare, we regularly conduct interventions such as eye check-up, dental check-up, and tuberculosis camps, and provide general health counselling services.

Social reforms

For decades, we have been relentlessly working to counter social evils such as exploitation, inequality and trafficking in remote corners of India. We have worked with communities and local bodies to roll out awareness campaigns on social issues such as child labour, child marriage, women's abuse, dowry and illiteracy.

We have also worked towards empowering rural women through financial literacy programmes. After all, a community is as educated as its women. Hence, we have invested in setting up self-help groups that educate women on the fundamental concepts of financial literacy and income generation.

Infrastructure development

Our goal is to enhance and develop rural infrastructure to facilitate all-round development of communities. Thus, we have taken up critical infrastructure development projects in areas where we operate. This includes the construction of roads to improve connectivity to nearby markets or hospitals, watershed development and irrigation projects, ponds, schools and hospitals, community halls/kitchens, sports and recreation centres and repairs/maintenance of places of heritage etc. We also aim to make our operations water positive through storage, recycling, and reuse to benefit the local community and preserve this precious resource.
