Kathautia mines

The Kathautia coal mines became operational in 2008 and were vested to Hindalco Industries Ltd. in April 2015, through a coal block auction conducted by the Ministry of Coal, Government of India. The mine is situated near Daltonganj in the Palamau district of Jharkhand, in and is part of the North Koel coalfield under CCL Command. It is an open-cast mine with a proposed lease area of 938 hectares, covering villages such as Kathautia, Kajri, Garikhas, Palhekhurd, Sakhui, Sika, and Batsara.

With an annual coal production capacity of 0.80 million tonnes over 30 years, the mine has a total of 29.29 million tonnes of proven geological reserves, comprising all coal seams. The coal grades here are primarily G-4 and G-6, with GCV between 5,600 and 6,100.

The coal from these mines is dispatched to Mahan Aluminium through a combination of trucks and rail. The coal is transported from the coal stock to the Rajhara Railway Siding and then to the Mahan Aluminium plant.

At Kathautia Mines, we are committed to practices that conserve natural resources and minimise our environmental impact. One of our key sustainability initiatives here is the construction of a rainwater harvesting pond, which enables us to conserve water, particularly during periods of low rainfall, and reduce our reliance on other sources of water.

Additionally, as part of our CSR programme, we have undertaken a range of activities to benefit the local community, such as extending support to local healthcare centres, conducting awareness campaigns on health and social issues, supporting educational centres, and more.
