Gare Palma mines

Gare Palma IV/4 (GP IV/4) Coal Mine is located in the Mand-Raigarh Coalfield in Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh.  The Ministry of Coal vested the mine to Hindalco Industries Limited through a vesting order dated 23 March 2015. The total mining lease area of the mine is 884.84 Ha. GP IV/4 is an ISO 9001 (Quality Management System), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management System), ISO 45001 (Occupational Health & Safety Management System), and ISO 50001 (Energy Management System) certified coal mine.

As of March 2015, GP IV/4 had an extractable reserve of 14.712 MT. The annual production capacity of the mine is 1 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). As of January 2025, after extraction, the remaining available reserves stand at 9.26 MT, with an average grade of G10.

Mining operations at GP IV/4 use drilling and blasting technology. It is combined with a shovel-dumper fleet and a 600 TPH in-pit crushing and conveying system, powered by solar energy for efficient material handling. With an emphasis on digitalisation, the mine operations are equipped with a fleet management system, enabling the monitoring and optimisation of production parameters in real time.

CSR and sustainability

ESG

Through our CSR initiatives, we focus on five key areas: education, health, livelihood, rural infrastructure and social issues.

  • Project Arogyam’s (Ni-kshay Mitra) curative healthcare programme supports TB patients in Raigarh. The CSR health centres provide medical facilities to villagers, including free medicines, health check-ups and hygiene awareness programmes.
  • Project RIPA is a decentralised apprenticeship initiative for rural women, focusing on skill development through training in tailoring and embroidery.
  • Project Gyanarjan provides transportation for 325 children to schools using two buses.
  • Project Nirmaan helped construct a hall at Adarsh Vidya Mandir Vidyalaya in Milupara village and a 300 m CC road in Banjikhol village. Additionally, a 2.6 km canal was developed for agricultural and irrigation purposes, benefiting 160 acres of land.

To restore and rehabilitate the OB dump, a VAM (vesicular arbuscular mycorrhiza) culture process for biofertiliser production has been initiated, and local people are being trained. We have replaced a diesel-operated LMV with a Tata Nexon EV for the transportation of employees between mines and residential areas, as well as for movement within the mine premises. The EV is powered by green energy generated from a solar plant located at the mine. Recently, we installed a 1 MWh solar battery at the mine to store surplus solar energy that was previously sent to the grid. By combining the solar plant and battery storage, we are currently meeting the energy demands of the mine.
