Durgmanwadi mines

Durgmanwadi mines is the first bauxite mine in the world to obtain the ISO 9001:2000 and OHSAS 18001 management systems certificate. The mine is located in a peninsula surrounded by dams and a sanctuary. It commenced operations in 1992 and supplies bauxite by road to its captive alumina plant at Belagavi, located 130km away.

Due to heavy wind and water erosion, the topsoil is scanty, resulting in the total absence of green cover, and the vegetation is limited to slopes with stunted growth due to the lack of plant nutrients in the soil. To address these environmental challenges, the Durgmanwadi mine has adopted state-of-the-art technology and innovative features in its design and operations.

ESG

Our mining operations at Durgmanwadi mines are guided by our commitment to sustainable and responsible practices. We have introduced computerised mine planning to ensure the most effective use of land and mining equipment. We have also replaced stationary crushers with mobile crushers, which limit mining activities to smaller areas and reduce diesel consumption. Additionally, we have implemented a stormwater collection and filtration system consisting of garland drainage, settling tanks and silt check dams to prevent the siltation of river beds. To control the spread of dust, we have installed atomised dust suppression systems on key HEMM machineries, haul roads, and dust transfer points.
