Our state-of-the-art alumina refinery at Muri was established in February 1948 by INDAL (Indian Aluminum) in collaboration with the Canadian multinational, Alcan. In 2005, following our acquisition of INDAL, this facility came under the Hindalco banner. The refinery and its residential colony cover a total area of 334.2 acres and are strategically located on the banks of the Subarnarekha River in Chota Muri, approximately 65 km from Ranchi in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand.
The Muri facility boasts a total refining capacity of 450,000 TPA, having undergone several stages of expansion and debottlenecking since its initial installed capacity of 4,000 TPA. The refinery produces both standard and specialty grades of alumina and alumina hydrate, serving customers globally across industries such as aluminium, refractories, glass, ceramics, and water treatment. With the installation of a Microfiner and Spin Flash Dryer, Muri also caters to the production of further value-added products on a global scale.
The Muri CSR team drives our commitment to corporate social responsibility with initiatives in education, sports, healthcare, and sustainable livelihoods in nearby villages. The unit has earned several awards for its ESG excellence and is one of our eight units certified as Single-Use Plastic-Free by CII. It also exemplifies circular economy principles by fully utilising red mud and fly ash in cement manufacturing, and is focused on achieving carbon neutrality with a target of 0.70 tCO2e/t by 2030.
Muri is now on a path to scale up its production to 100% specialty alumina and hydrates, laying the foundation for continued innovation and growth in the future.
The Muri CSR team takes forward our commitment to CSR and conducts various initiatives in education, sports, healthcare, and sustainable livelihoods in and around its neighbouring villages. The unit has received several prestigious awards for its excellence in ESG, and is also one of our eight units certified as Single Use Plastic-free by CII. This unit also exemplifies circular economy principles by fully utilising its red mud residue and fly ash in cement manufacturing.
