Hindalco's Belagavi plant, located in Karnataka (West India), has been operational since 1969. It houses a Specialty Alumina plant, a world-class Alumina research centre, and a Carbon Paste plant. Initially, the refinery primarily met the captive demand for metallurgical Alumina used in smelting operations. From 1980-90s, the business has strategically shifted focus from producing metallurgical grade Alumina to 100% Specialty Alumina for non-metallurgical applications.
We follow an integrated approach, using the Bayer process to produce Hydrate with controlled particle size distribution and chemical purity. Our state-of-the-art technology enables the production of various types of Alumina, including Calcined Coarse Alumina, Fine Alumina, Dry Hydrate, Fine Hydrate, and Standard Hydrate. These serve multiple applications such as Refractory, Ceramic, Polishing, Glass, Water Treatment, and Flame Retardant products.
We manufacture over 120 different grades of Specialty Alumina and Hydrates, ranging from Normal soda to Ultra-low soda in terms of elemental purity and offering both wide and narrow particle size distributions. In addition to our standard products, we offer customised solutions to meet the specific needs of global customers. Rigorous quality control at each manufacturing stage ensures consistent product performance for our customers.
We are also set to be the first in India to manufacture Precipitated Hydrate (PPT Hydrate), setting new benchmarks for Halogen-Free Flame Retardant (HFFR) solutions. This initiative demonstrates our commitment to innovation and delivering high-quality, sustainable products.
In our pursuit of operational excellence, we leverage AI for predictive quality and maintenance. This proactive approach allows us to anticipate quality issues, prevent equipment failures, optimise production processes, and maintain consistent product quality with high plant availability. Complementing this, our ongoing Six Sigma projects aim to further elevate the quality standards of our offerings, ensuring we meet customer demands effectively.
There are multiple sustainability initiatives being undertaken -- One of our key practices is more than 100% dispatch of red mud, a residue from the Bayer process, to cement industry, which leads to creating value from waste and promotes circular economy.
The other is the work being done in renewable energy- biomass, solar, and wind power. Towards our commitment of green alumina to our customers, we have commissioned one of the largest bio-mass boilers in the country to meet ~40% of our steam requirements at Belagavi. We also intend to implement a bio-CNG plant by FY 2030. We have also commissioned the first phase of our hybrid wind + solar power plant at Belagavi due to which the plant has operated on 100% green power for 4 consecutive months. With these, Belagavi’s carbon emissions are a benchmark for many refineries.
At Belagavi, our YTD Dec’24 emissions are at 0.49 tCO2e/t only, which is significantly below the global industry benchmark of 1.29 tCO2e/t. Also, we have one of the greenest Alumina refineries at Belagavi.
We achieved a significant reduction in specific freshwater consumption at Belagavi through our close looping system that allows us to increase our water reuse.
In line with our long-term goals, we have a roadmap in place to achieve an additional reduction (~80%) in CO2 emissions by 2030, which enables us to reach the net zero targets quickly. Notably, we are decarbonizing our operations and decoupling our business growth from emissions to drive the transition to a net zero economy - specifically our commitment towards sustainable development goals and (promoting) a healthier planet for a better future.
