Dahej

Birla Copper, our copper division in Dahej, Gujarat is one of the largest single-location copper smelters in the world and boasts a modern residential colony. It was originally a part of Indo Gulf Corporation under Grasim, but was amalgamated with Hindalco Industries Ltd. in 2002 as part of a strategic move to consolidate the metals business. Our Dahej facility is an integrated unit comprising copper smelters, a captive power plant, oxygen plants, by-products plants, precious metals recovery plant, utilities, and a captive jetty. Dahej Harbour and Infrastructure Limited (DHIL) is strategically located near the unit for seamless logistics. The facility also houses HIC-Dahej, our world-class innovation centre that specialises in R&D related to copper.

CSR and sustainability

As the Belagavi plant is located in a water stress area, we have commissioned a 700KLD tertiary water treatment plant, equipped with Reverse Osmosis (RO) filtration and a Mechanical Vapour Recompression (MVR) based thermal solution, facilitating the complete reuse of treated water. This has led to a significant reduction in our specific freshwater consumption. Furthermore, we plan to soon start using desalinated sea water sourced from a local common desalination plant of GIDC. We have also adopted an energy-efficient process for copper rod production, which has resulted in a 6.4% reduction in LNG consumption.
