Birla Copper, the copper division of Hindalco Industries, has shifted gears into the fast lane. Along with a focus on operational excellence, Hindalco has increased Birla Copper’s presence in the value-added market. A big move for the brand was the acquisition of Ryker Base’s Continuous Cast Rod Unit located at Asoj, Gujarat, in FY22. The Ryker unit has now been renamed Birla Copper Asoj.

The unit is a good fit for Birla Copper’s growth strategy. It produces copper wire rods using German technology, consumes less energy and is significantly lower in carbon emissions. With a capacity of 225,000 metric tonnes of cast and rolled copper rods, Birla Copper Asoj has taken Hindalco into the rank of the top three copper rod players in the world, outside of China.

Birla Copper operates one of the world’s largest single-location copper smelters at Dahej in Gujarat, with a capacity of 345,000 tonnes. The acquisition will strengthen Birla Copper’s copper rod manufacturing capacity by providing a time-to-market advantage, thus allowing the company to cater to growing demand from the electrical and electronics industries.

Copper is an integral element of the digital world. It is used in all digital devices, including IoT, computers and smartphones. It also powers the renewable energy space as an essential part of EVs and battery storage. In addition, Birla Copper has entered into two new segments–copper magnesium alloy rods for railways and inner groove tubes for ACs.

As India accelerates in its journey towards electrification, urbanisation, renewables and e-mobility, Birla Copper is partnering the nation towards smart, sustainable progress.
