About us

The Hindalco Innovation Centre (HIC) Energy and Decarbonisation Department at Hindalco is at the forefront of energy and carbon management initiatives, working hand in hand with plant energy managers and coordinators to drive sustainable practices across the organisation. Our primary focus areas encompass a range of functions aimed at enhancing energy efficiency, reducing carbon emissions, and promoting renewable energy adoption. Central to our mission is the implementation of comprehensive energy and carbon management strategies across all units of Hindalco. Through proactive measures and innovative solutions, we strive to optimise resource utilisation and minimise environmental impact. This includes spearheading decarbonisation projects, embracing renewable energy initiatives, and continuously improving process efficiency to mitigate energy consumption.

In addition to our proactive approach, we also ensure regulatory compliance with various mandates such as the Energy Conservation Act and the Perform, Achieve and Trade (PAT) Scheme. Our team liaisons with statutory bodies such as Central Electricity Regulatory Commission, State Electricity Regulatory Commission and Bureau of Energy Efficiency, staying abreast of regulatory updates and guiding units in fulfilling mandatory compliance requirements.

We actively support units in power trading activities, optimising energy procurement strategies to maximise cost-efficiency. Moreover, we oversee Renewable Purchase Obligation compliance, facilitating Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) purchases to support renewable energy integration.

Furthermore, our department plays a central role in the trading of RECs and Energy Savings Certificates, ensuring centralised control and maximising value realisation.

As part of our commitment to knowledge dissemination and capacity building, we provide technical training sessions to plant personnel on topics such as PAT, ISO 50001, Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and Aditya Birla Group Technical Standards, empowering them to contribute effectively to energy management objectives.

Through collaborative efforts and a relentless pursuit of sustainability, HIC Energy and Decarbonisation Department aims to lead Hindalco towards a greener, more sustainable future, where environmental responsibility is integrated into every aspect of our operations.

Our expertise encompasses:

  • Decarbonisation and renewable projects
  • Fuel switch and biomass integration in power generation
  • Compliance towards regulatory requirements in energy and carbon
  • Reporting energy and greenhouse gas (GHG) key performance indicators (KPI) in various sustainability forums and integrated report
  • Training and knowledge sharing for plants to create awareness around energy and carbon accounting standards, CBAM, low-carbon aluminium, etc.
  • Digitisation of energy and GHG KPI through system integration.

Key achievements

Key achievements

  • Hindalco’s total renewable capacity by Q3FY25 stands at 189 MW (largely solar and wind) with another 39 MW of projects in the pipeline to be commissioned by FY26.
  • Hindalco has contracted for round-the-clock renewable energy to the quantum of 200 MW for two of our smelters, expected commercial operation date of the projects is by FY26/27.
  • Implementation of innovative projects such as battery energy storage system, floating solar plant and biomass-based boiler to decarbonise our emissions from mines, refineries and smelters.
  • Upgrading our existing grid connectivity to 400 kV for our aluminium and copper smelters to ingest larger quantity of renewable electricity in the future with increased grid reliability.
