Hindalco Industries Ltd has achieved ASI Performance Standard V2 (2017) and Chain of Custody V1 (2017) Certification for its rolling operations at the Hirakud FRP plant in Odisha.
Hindalco has been certified against the ASI Performance and Chain of Custody Standards at its Hirakud FRP plant in Odisha, India. The 135,000-ton capacity Hirakud plant specialises in thin-gauge tight tolerance flat rolled products including ultra-light gauge foil stock for making aseptic carton packs, can body stock for beverage cans, closure stock for bottle caps, fan blade stock, electronic and panel stock for panel bodies. Its products are destined for use in several industries including electrical, consumer durables, transport, and defense sectors. Hirakud is the first and only manufacturer of can body stock in India.
This is Hindalco’s second ASI-certified facility after its Mouda aluminium foil plant, which achieved Performance Standard Certification in February 2022.
The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) is a global, multi-stakeholder, non-profit standards setting and certification organisation. It works towards responsible production, sourcing and stewardship of aluminium following an entire value chain approach.
The ASI Certification programme was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The ASI Performance Standard V2 (2017) defines environmental, social and governance principles and criteria, with the aim to address sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain. It sets out 59 criteria under the three sustainability pillars of Environment, Social, and Governance, which address key issues such as biodiversity, labour rights, Indigenous Peoples rights, and greenhouse gas emissions. The ASI CoC Standard sets out requirements for the creation of a Chain of Custody for material that is produced and processed through the value chain into diverse downstream sectors. The implementation of ASI’s CoC Standard links verified practices at successive steps of the supply chain – certified under the ASI Performance Standard – to the products produced by ASI Certified Entities.
The independent, third-party audits of Hirakud FRP facility was carried out by LiberoAssurance.
Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI said, “We congratulate Hindalco Industries Ltd, for achieving ASI Performance Standard and Chain of Custody Standard certifications at its Hirakud FRP rolling mill. Rolled aluminium products are essential to an extensive range of downstream sectors, making rolling mills key players that support the sustainability of numerous global supply chains. This dual ASI Certification, coupled with appropriate upstream sourcing can help Hindalco’s Hirakud FRP plant meet its customers’ responsible sourcing requirements, and enable the use of on-product ASI claims.”
Mr. Nilesh Koul, Senior President – Aluminium Downstream, Hindalco, said, “We are delighted to receive the dual certification from ASI for our Hirakud plant. Hirakud is a pioneer in developing new products like ultra-light gauge foil stock and can body stock in India. We believe a focus on sustainability and innovation will help us build more long-term partnerships across the supply chain. Achieving ASI’s Performance Standard and Chain of Custody certification is an affirmation of our unwavering focus on ESG. It is also a testament to Hindalco’s ability to deliver low carbon, sustainable aluminium solutions for a greener, stronger, smarter world."
