Hindalco imports majority of its raw material as copper concentrate for the manufacturing of copper cathodes and rods. Apart from the copper content, the raw material also contains gold, silver and other elements like selenium, platinum and palladium etc. due to their natural affinity towards copper ore.
Hindalco pays for the gold and silver content in the copper concentrate based on the prevailing international bullion market prices and other factors.
Hindalco extracts these precious metals in its Precious Metals Refinery located at Dahej, after copper refining to produce 99.9 per cent pure gold and silver bars along with selenium powder of 99 per cent purity.
